Resveratrol vs. Acai berry

August 8th, 2009 healthiq No comments

Resveratrol is a great anti-aging health supplement. I believe it is a lot healthier than the so called superfruit Acai Berry.

Science Versus Hype – Resveratrol Versus Acai

Resveratrol a chemical compound in red wine

Acai, a fruit found in the Amazon rainforest

There is a great hype that Acai Berry can help you to loose weight and stop aging, but do you realize that Acai is just a freeze dried berry and not a hidden chemical that has been extracted from a plant?

Resveratrol has so much more to offer than Acai berry. Both supplements have great ORAC values and are definitely a greeat source of anti-oxidants, but Resveratrol has many other health benefits.

Resveratrol Health Benefits vs. Acai Berry

  • it can help you to live longer by activating the sirtris gene
  • resveratrol is actively increasing your metabolism
  • athlets report that they can run longer distances in a shorter time
  • resveratrol prevents that free radicals interact with your healthy cells
  • it will help you to lose more weight than a simple acai berry extract or green tea
  • neuro protection is another health benefit

Acai Berry on the other hand is a simple fruit. It is one of the best supplements you can add to your daily to get your daily dose of anti-oxidants, but Resveratrol provides a similar amount of them, so why bother?

Resveratrol Orac Values

The ORAC value of trans-resveratrol is estimated to be about 3000 per 100mg. The recommended dosage is 500mg per day, so that would make it a ORAC value of 15,000.

Acai on the other hand has a ORAC score of 5000-6000.

In comparison: Per 100 grams

  • Apples ORAC value (218)
  • Bananas (221)
  • blueberries (2,400)
  • Acai scores a 5,500 ORAC value

Conclusion?

Resveratrol has much more to offer. It is currently actively used to treat inflammation, joint pains, colon cancer and other diseases. Acai is just another hype that you should avoid.

The Resveratrol Cancer Cure – Is Resveratrol really an effective cancer treatment?

July 24th, 2009 healthiq No comments

Resveratrol found in grapes and red wine may help to treat pancreatic cancer. It disables the function of the cancers cells by interacting with your mitochondria
Mitochondria are basically the energy cells of our body, which are made of proteins mainly.

Can resveratol shut down the energy source of cancer cells? (mitochondria)

Can resveratol shut down the energy source of cancer cells? (mitochondria)

A resveratrol study, that has been published in the magazine “Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biolody”, claims that a treatment with resveratrol before irradiation results
in a so called apoptosis (a certain type of ceall death).

The great challenge is to find right resveratrol concentration to treat cancer. Tumor cells seem to become vulnerable if you take resveratrol, making it easier for radiation to destroy cancer cells. Normal tissues on the other hand are getting stronger.

Scientists all over the world begin studying resveratrol as a tumor sensitizer. In one resveratrol cancer study pancreatic cancer cells are being divided into two groups:

  • - cells treated with resveratrol before iodination
  • - cells treated with resveratrol at a dose of 50mg per ml before iodination

Very high doses of resveratrol are safe as long as the patient is actively monitored.

One result: The function of proteins in the cancer cells became highly vunerable to the treatment with resveratrol. This is an important breakthrough, because mitochondria contains DNA that provides enough energy for the cancer cells. If we can shut down the energy source then we stop cancer.

Can Resveratrol help to destroy cancer cells?

Can Resveratrol help to destroy cancer cells?

As we previously reported, there are currently clinical resveratrol trials going on, which will hopefully bring more results. Aside from that there are many scientific resveratrol cancer studies that will help to find out more about the phytoalexin.

Conclusion: Resveratrol looks like a very promising cancer treatment that might play a major role in the future to treat and stop cancer completely. Cancer prevention could also become a possibility. After all, cancer is a major threat that has many forms: breast cancer, lung cancer, ovarian cancer, bladder cancer, postate cancer, bone cancer and pancreatic ancer to name a few forms of cancer. If we could treat all of the cancer forms with just one supplement, then resveratrol is truly the greatest discovery since antibiotics!

Resveratrol Health Benefits are too many to ignore

June 11th, 2009 healthiq No comments

Research is still on about resveratrol and whether it can be effective in what was touted 10 years ago, citing the French factor. The French have low heart disease cases and that was directly responsible for the large amounts of red wine they drink. Resveratrol is contained in the skins of red grapes.

Later day studies have also proved that resveratrol is an antioxidant and can be effective in stalling the aging process or at least not speeding it up. Researchers and noted medical practitioners felt it can hunt out the ageing gene and then make it ineffective, while some among them also felt resveratrol could change the very basis of healthcare.

Dr. Oz and Dr. Nicholas Perricone agree that antioxidants can repair the damaged skins and also impede the aging process leading to a more radiant and softer looking skin.

Scientists and researches are of the view that the health benefits from resveratrol are much higher than any other vitamins. They feel unanimously that the onset of old age could recede with the use of resveratrol in the form of condensed vitamins. Dr. Christoph Westfall of Sirtris felt that the goal of researchers is to forestall the diseases that usually affect people, when they are in their 50’s, 60’s and 70’s. With the promise that this compound found in grape plants has shown, then the nature of healthcare as it is understood now could also undergo a sea change.

Tested on mice to check on the beneficial properties as it is yet to be tested on humans, has yielded great results. During the study, two mice were made to run on small treadmills and the one, who was on resveratrol, ran faster than the other even though it was fatter than the other mouse that was not administered resveratrol. As news of the findings came out and the media lapped it up, resveratrol became an instant hit in print and online.

News spread like fire and the nation got hooked to it with famous people coming on television screens and the YouTube talking volumes about it.

Resveratrol Health Benefits

Take advantage of the many benefits!

Take advantage of the many benefits!

Resveratrol has a wide array of health benefits. The resveratrol health benefits are so diverse and impressive that many label this relatively newly discovered substance a “wonder drug”. While far from the perfect substance, resveratrol has proved to be an extremely healthy drug, with too many benefits to list.

One of the many impressive resveratrol health benefits is the fact that it can significantly increase the lifespan of various animals. Since the drug has not been studied for very long, no conclusive tests have been done on humans as far as life-extension, but all tests done on animals showed increased life spans and healthier lives in general.

One of the lesser-known resveratrol health benefits is athletic performance improvement. In lab studies done on mice, research concluded that mice given resveratrol on a regular basis endured tests much better than normal mice. Again, this has not been fully tested on humans, but scientists say that results would be similar in humans.

Cancer prevention is another one of the many resveratrol health benefits. This one is controversial, as to date there has never been a real cure or prevention for cancer. Details are still fuzzy as to the effects of resveratrol on cancer patients, but tests done on mice concluded that resveratrol actually prevented skin cancers from developing. Ever since the results of that test were published, scientists and doctors from around the world have been working hard on developing resveratrol-based cancer prevention medicines. Tests will soon be done on humans, and we should all be excited to see the results! These are just some of the hundreds of resveratrol health benefits, and until this drug has been fully researched, we have no way of knowing how many more there are!

Resveratrol in red wine makes the French less susceptible to heart diseases

Red Wine, one the many resveratrol sources

Red Wine, one of the many resveratrol sources

Found in red grape skins, resveratrol is a compound belonging to a branch of oriental medicine that is used to cure liver, heart and blood vessel related diseases. Being of very recent origin it has already become popular for being an effective anti-oxidant.

Resveratrol and its benefits came into focus only four years ago when a survey conducted revealed that the French rarely suffer from heart problems. Being the largest consumers of red wine, risk of heart disease among them is considerably less. In the making of red wine, the skins also go in adding to their red color. Low rate of heart problems among the French was more remarkable given their passion for high fat diets. It was found the red wine or the skins of red grapes that contain the compound resveratrol, led to the low incidence of heart diseases.

Resveratrol is not only present in the skins of red grapes, but is also found in plants like lilies, eucalyptus, spruce and present in peanuts and mulberries. But it is present abundantly in the seeds, vines, root and stalks of wine growing grapes with a high concentration in the skins of grapes. Studies have found that the concentration in the skin is extremely high. It is a part of the grape plant’s antibiotic compound to prevent diseases and fungus. It has been found the fungus in grape plants can be high in cooler climates where the resveratrol concentration is also higher.

Much of the skin remains in red wine production to lend the red color to the wines. Resveratrol content in red wine is higher as the skins remain all along during the fermentation process. But in non fermented grape products like grape juice, there is not much resveratrol present. This finding about red wines and the French have been taken with the low incidence of heart attacks and coronary diseases among general red wine drinkers.

Resveratrol has been proved to be an anti oxidant that is much more effective than Vitamins C and E.  Platelet forms less due to resveratrols as have found from tests done in artificial environments.

Does Resveratrol Really Work?

Does Resveratrol Really Work?

If you are wondering how resveratrol can have so many great health benefits in spite of being a single compound, you need to be aware of the reasons behind why resveratrol works. With some great properties, resveratrol is able to show various anti-aging and anti-oxidizing properties. Resveratrol is also a good choice for weight loss, and it can even prevent various diseases like the cardio-vascular diseases, Alzheimer’s and cancer to a certain extent. Let us look at the reasons why resveratrol works!

A Strong Anti-Oxidant

Being a strong anti-oxidant, it can effectively control the bad cholesterol or the low density lipoprotein in our bodies, and enhance the amount of good cholesterol at the same time. It restricts the aggregation of platelets in the blood streams and renders a better blood flow through the vessels. This prevents the chances of the cardio-vascular diseases and lowers the risks of heart attacks. Nutrition is seen to get enhanced at the same time with a better blood flow, increasing the longevity of the cells and resulting in anti-aging.

Being a strong anti-oxidant also helps resveratrol to make sure that the cells are not damaged by the free radicals that get produced in the body from the various human body systems. This leads to better cell preservation and maintenance. Moreover, the body sees a better metabolism with this compound. With a better metabolism, the processes of nutrition and digestion are seen to improve.

Resveratrol Metabolism And Nutrition

With better nutrition, the cells get better nourishment which helps with the immunity and longer cell life. At the same time, a properly working digestive system ensures the food to get digested without resulting in the formation of fats in the body. On top of this, a good metabolism helps the body to burn down the unwanted fats and release energy for the body to use for its better maintenance and immunity.

All these factors make resveratrol impart the various health benefits mentioned to your body. With better nutrition, immunity, maintenance, and the other vital processes of the body, you see a longer, healthier and younger life ahead of you if you can successfully utilize the advantages of resveratrol.
