Resveratrol: Clinical Trials, Studies And Research

July 15th, 2009 healthiq No comments

Many sites report that there haven’t been any clinical trials on humans. To be exact there have been clinical resveratrol trials on humans, birds, dogs, cats, plants and other animals.

According to the NYTimes, GlaxoSmith Kline has bought the company “sirtris” that discovered resveratrol last year for about $720 million. The company “sirtris” was founded shortly after Dr. Sinclair disovered the compound. Chief Executive is Cr. Christoph Westphal.

In one clinical study Dr. James Smoliga (Marywood University) gave 90 volunteers a polyphenol blend of 400mg Resveratrol dosage, 400mg Red Wine Grape extract, and 100 mg Quercetin. Th research showed that the volunteersexperiences increased endurance,  strength and verbal memory. (Source)

If you want to help to bring the clinical studies on resveratrol to the next step, you can volunteer to be part of a clinical trial. The government page (clinicaltrials.gov) lists various clinical trials on their site. They are researching:

  • Resveratrol in Healthy Adult Participants (currently active)
  • Resveratrol for Patients With Colon Cancer (recruiting)
  • Resveratrol in Preventing Cancer in Healthy Participants (completed)
  • Resveratrol in Treating Patients With Colorectal Cancer That Can Be Removed By Surgery (recruiting)
  • Phase I Biomarker Study of Dietary Grape-Derived Low Dose Resveratrol for Colon Cancer Prevention (currently active)

Doctor Ozs Neti Pot As Seen On Oprah

Doctor Oz's Neti Pot As Seen On Oprah

The neti pot flushs the nasal passages with salt water. This neti pot is a good way to deal with nasal problems and has been used for centuries. It’s like a teapot with warm water and salt. When you pour the mixture through one nostril it will come out the other (that’s the basic prinicpal).

Many people nowadays swear that nasal irrigation helps them. Dr. Mehmet Oz is a firm believer too. He presented this technique, that clears up the sinuses completely, on the Oprah Winfrey Show once.It is used to treat many chronic sinus symptoms and can even help you use to reduce use of medication (antibiotics etc.).

Neti Pots are also used for Yoga, because controlled breathing is very essential if you want to master Yoga.

Does a high dose of Resveratrol increase your testosterone?

July 13th, 2009 healthiq No comments

If you are taking resveratrol in very high doses (1000mg and more) you should be aware of increased testosterone levels.

We know that our body is producing less testosterone the older we are. This could be directly related to aging.

Other interesting facts about Resveratrol:

  • Resveratrol might be an agonist of estrogen and androgen receptors
  • Resveratrol might be considered a “aromatase inhibitor“. (Source:oxford journal)
  • Resveratrol might influence the testosterone production
  • Resveratrol might significantly  decrease  IGF-1 (Insulin-like growth factor 1) which is needed for muscle growth
  • Resveratrol suppresses prostate cancer progression in transgenic mice (Source:oxford journal)
  • It can boost your athletic performance
  • For some sports Resveratrol is an advantage for others not: Aerobic Exercises / Sports can benefit; Weight gain /muscle training does *not* benefit

Why is Resveratrol being extracted from Japanese Knotweed?

July 5th, 2009 healthiq No comments

Well, why Japanese Knotweed and not from one of those berries?

Japanese Knotweed is growing everywhere (like crazy) and can be found in 39 of 50 US states. Considering that it can adopt to any situation easily and grow at extreme rates it is a very cheap resveratrol source.

If pharma industries would extract it from berries or grapes the costs would multiply because those don’t grow at rates like japanese knotweed does. So it’s only rational thinking if they extract resveratrol from japanese knotweed instead of anything else.

With that being said, let’s take another look at the best resveratrol source:

Dr. Sinclair and Resveratrol on 60 minutes

July 4th, 2009 healthiq No comments

Another popular promoter of resveratrol is Dr. Sinclair, who is partly responsible for the discovery. Dr. Westphl and David Sinclair are two biochemist at Harvard have studied genetic components related to aging for the past years. When they discovered resveratrol, it was a break-through.

At the moment they focus all their efforts on a certain gene, the sirtuin gene, which can be found in human, animals and even plants. Under normal circumstances the sirtuin gene is inactive. But when it is activated it could trigger everything we need to live a longer life. Longevity is one step closer!

Sinclair has run so many tests that he also found many compounds that could help to prevent heart-diseases. His discovery has the chance to change the aging process completely.

The company GlaxoSmithKline purchased Dr. Sinclair’s and Dr. Westphl’s start-up for nearly $750 million. I believe this number reflects how important this discovery is.

If you haven’t seen the news entry on 60 minutes, where Dr. Sinclair is talking about resveratrol on tv, then you can watch it here:

Is High Potency Resveratrol Really Worth It?

Is High Potency Resveratrol really worth it?

Is High Potency Resveratrol really worth it?

We all know about the many health benefits of resveratrol. Some might think it is the best compound that has ever been found. Wouldn’t it make sense to take a very high dose of resveratrol if it can’t have any side effects? Especially since it can reverse the signs of aging? No. That is wrong.

Many high potency resveratrol supplements can give you well over 300mg/day. But don’t be a fool. It could possibly lead to dehydration and end in a loss of essential nutrients.

Other resveratrol supplements (non-high-potency) might be able to give you 50mg per pill, but also include green tea or other extracts. All of this combined can be a lot more healthful than high-potency resveratrol? Why? Everything is good if it is consumed moderately. Don’t consume anything excessively!

You will also benefit of the interaction of the different compounds. Green Tea for example helped Chinese people for centuries to live a longer healthier life. It is very similar to the French Paradox and we could probably also talk of a Chinese Paradox.

Trivia: The best source of resveratrol is Japanese Knotweed and is a natural 50% trans type.

Conclusion? At a first glance a high-potency resveratrol supplement might give you more of what is needed to live a longer healthier life, but instead of helping it might become slightly harmful to your body.

Instead, order a resveratrol supplement and green tea pill then you will have a good mix of both worlds.

Here are two supplements you might want to try (it is free):

Resveratrol & Drug Interaction

July 4th, 2009 healthiq No comments

A recent study underlines that cardiovascular drugs and resveratrol may interact. The study also claims that resveratrol has a higher antioxidant effect than vitamin E.

If you are doing some research about resveratrol, you might look for it under different names:

  • Cis-Resveratrol
  • Kojo-Kon
  • Phytoalexin
  • Phytoestrogen
  • Protykin
  • Red Wine Extract
  • Resveratrols
  • RSV
  • RSVL
  • Stilbene Phytoalexin
  • Trans-Resveratrol
  • Wine Extract
  • Wine Pill

It reduces the activity of platelets in blood cotting and has a weak estrogen effect.

Therefore women with estrogen-cancer should avoid resveratrol
